Resumen:
Rapid solidified Al-Fe based alloys can be obtained with different kinds of microstructures which combine amorphous, crystalline and quasicrystalline phases. Thus, it is possible to obtain alloys with excellent mechanical properties, corrosion behaviour and superplasticity behaviour among other properties with great potential for industrial applications. The microstructure of the rapid solidified alloys is controlled by the nucleation process. Thus, the knowledge of the effect of each alloying element on the cluster formation in the undercooled liquid would allow controlling the microstructure of the rapid solidified alloys. Several rapid solidified Al-Fe based alloys were studied by means of Mössbauer Spectroscopy, X‑ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The total structure factors and the reduced pair distribution function were obtained from the XRD results. Mössbauer Spectra were fitted using histograms distribution with the Normos Program. Moreover, Molecular Dynamic Simulation was performed for binary alloys using potentials obtained from the Embedded Atom Method (EAM). Cluster analysis using the Honeycutt-Andersen Method was done. The results suggest that Al-Fe icosahedral clusters are formed in the undercooled liquid and this order can be modified or stabilised depending of the alloy elements.
