Resumen:
Mg65Cu25RE10 (RE: Rare Earth) alloys have very high glass forming ability and high tensile strength which is very attractive for industrial applications. However, these alloys also showed a brittle behaviour that limits it application. In an early work [1] it was observed that partial substitution of Cu by Al improves the ductility of the alloy. In this work, melt-spun Mg65Cu25-xAlxMM10 (MM: Mischmetal; x = 0, 5, 10) samples were studied. The structure and the crystallization process were analyzed by means X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was observed that a partial substitution of Cu by Al increases the stability of the amorphous phase displacing the onset of the crystallization towards higher temperatures. The enthalpies and the apparent activation energies were determined from the DSC curves. The effect of the Cu substitution by Al on the amorphous phase stability and its ductility is discussed.
