Resumen:
The objective of this work was to quantify the evapotranspiration (ET) response to N supply, and to elucidate the physiological factors influencing this response. Maize was grown under two contrasting N supplies (0 and 120 kg N ha-1) and two water regimes (irrigated and rain-fed). Soil water content was measured with a neutron probe and ET was estimated by water balance. Physiological variables (leaf area index and conductance) were recorded. Nitrogen supply increased 7% seasonal ET associated mainly with greater ET rates during the early grain filling period. Nitrogen supply increased both, the soil water depletion capacity and the transpiration capacity of the crop.
