Accurate Identification and Distribution of Different Species within Achromobacter Genus

Even if Achromobacter xylosoxidans does not represent the only species capable of causing infections in immunocompromised patients, most clinical isolates belonging into the genus are still referred as A. xylosoxidans due to difficulties for arriving to a definitive identification at the species level. Phenotype-based techniques and molecular tools were conducted to characterize 40 isolates recovered from fibrocystic and no-fibrocystic patients from 2 hospitals of Argentina. Concordant results were achieved using nrdA and blaOXA genes as species specific markers. Prompt and accurate identification tools will provide an opportunity to understand the epidemiology and clinical impact of the different Achromobacter species.
