Resumen:
This work presents a study of the correlation between the rapidly solidified microstructure and the mechanical behavior of an Al-Fe-Cr-Ti alloy containing icosahedrical quasicrystalline and intermetallic nanoparticles dispersed in an α-Al matrix. An Al-Fe-Cr-Ti alloy was produced by powder atomization followed by extrusion. The microstructure of the extruded bar was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties were assessed through tensile and Vickers microhardness tests at room temperature. A study of the different contributions to the strengthening processes was carried out. The results were used to fit theoretical models that describe the various contributions of each mechanism to the overall strength of the material. A combination of classic strengthening mechanisms including the Hall-Petch effect, the Orowan effect and solid solution strengthening was found to be responsible for the exceptionally high strength of the alloy studied.
