Resumen:
Functional dissection of adaptive traits through the development of segregating mapping populations is hampered by long generations times in most forest trees. An alternative approach is to investigate pattems of genetic variation in natural populations to possibly detect statistical associations between phenotypic traits and genetic markers segregating in a population, so called association or linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping. An earlier study of SNPs located in the coding region of a phytochrome gene (phyB2) from a set of 116 European aspen (Populus tremula) trees collected across a latitudinal gradient in Sweden, found 4 SNPs that showed significant clinal variation and associations with day-length induced growth cessation. Here we extend this study by analyzing additional SNPs, identified by sequencing 10 short (800 bp) fragments located across a 80kb region surrounding the phyB 2 locus.
