Resumen:
The use of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in cattle has experienced a breakthrough in the recent years thanks to his massive commercial implementation, mainly in the Americas. This fact is possible thanks to the acceptable efficiency rates achieved by this technique in cattle, allowing a rapid expansion to animals of different breeds and in different countries. However, its efficiency rates has not been improved in the last decade. One important factor to consider to optimize this technique is the influence of the breed of the animal used, as has been demonstrated previously. We evaluate in vitro fertilization rates in oocytes derived from Lidia cows, one of the most important cattle breeds reared in Spain.. This animal population, characterized by being selected only by bravery and with moderate fertility indexes could be an interesting candidate to IVF procedures since the limited quantity of gametes available. Fertilization rates were satisfactory, with a percentage of 54,12% (105/194) of normal di-pronuclear zygotes. These results are similar to those obtained previously by other authors in different breeds commercial breeds presently used in IVF commercial programs. Therefore, we can conclude that oocytes derived from bullfight cows can be fertilized using standard protocols currently used in IVF programs. The implementation of IVF programs in the Lidia Spanish cattle breed could be an interesting opportunity to explore, allowing to maximize the outcome of the superior dead sires killed in the arena and the oocytes derived from Lidia cows slaughtered by diverse causes.
