Resumen:
It was observed that the clay layers formed an intercalated structure in the nanocomposites. The composites showed a higher hydrophilic character than the starch due to the high polarity of the MMT added. It was observed that the maximum of water uptake as well as the rate of water absorption was reduced by the addition of clay to the starch. The clay produces a tortuous path-way that influences the rate of water-uptake. A remarkable improvement in the mechanical properties was observed in the nanocomposites due to the stronger interfacial interaction between the matrix and layered silicate.
