Resumen:
Small scale production of AISI 316 L, SS, cementless prosthesis by gelcasting, GC, is analyzed. This aim leads to study the shrinkage, density and mechanical strength of acetabular cups employing dilatometric analysis, compression tests, metallographic and finite element analysis. The pieces were produced from dispersions of SS particles smaller than 44 mm) in water solutions of acrylamide monomer with polymerization aids. These slurries were cast into plastic moulds, gelled in situ at 90 C and un-moulded. The greens were subject to a typical thermal cycle, employed in SS powder metallurgy, composed by heating at 600 C h-1, sintering at 1180 C during 90 min and cooling down at same rate, and under permanent dry hydrogen flux. The results show the feasibility of implementation of mass production of SS medical devices by metal gelcasting.
