AGROECOSYSTEMS SUSTAINABILITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY IN MAIZE AND SOYBEAN: EFFECTS OF CROP BREEDING AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

The required increases in agricultural production to meet the growing demands for food, feed and biofuels depend strongly on the global gain in grain yield (GG, in kg ha-1 y-1) of species like maize (Mz) and soybean (Sb). Improved management techniques and breeding activities are necessary to keep GG at increasingly high rates without compromising the ecosystem’s sustainability. The task becomes more challenging when considering climate change scenarios. In the current presentation, we will analyze trends in GG of mentioned species as well as the contribution of genetics, agronomy, and their interaction to GG. The focus will be on research developed in the America´s major producer countries of Mz and Sb, like the United States (USA), Brazil (BRA) and, particularly Argentina (ARG).
