Resumen:
Birds have evolved to produce communicationsounds (sonations) with their wings, tail, feet, or beak dozens if not hundredsof times independently. Ongoing work continues to uncover many new examples ofsonations and the physical acoustic mechanisms by which these sounds areproduced. The repeated (convergent) evolution of a trait permits sophisticatedevolutionary tests of how and why it evolves. Here, we outline a series ofadaptive questions about the evolution of sonations: Does producing sonationsentail tradeoffs with other functions, such as flight? How do sonationsco-evolve with production of vocalizations? How do sonations co-evolve withbehavior? Compared to vocalizations, do sonations occupy the same functionalspace as vocalizations? Do sonations occupy the same acoustic space asvocalizations? While each of these questions has already received someattention within individual bird clades, with so many convergent origins acrossbirds, the bigger picture has only begun to appear.@font-face{font-family:"Cambria Math";panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4;mso-font-charset:0;mso-generic-font-family:auto;mso-font-pitch:variable;mso-font-signature:-536870145 1107305727 0 0 415 0;}@font-face{font-family:Calibri;panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;mso-font-charset:0;mso-generic-font-family:auto;mso-font-pitch:variable;mso-font-signature:-520092929 1073786111 9 0 415 0;}@font-face{font-family:"MS Mincho";mso-font-alt:"MS 明朝";mso-font-charset:128;mso-generic-font-family:modern;mso-font-pitch:fixed;mso-font-signature:-1610612033 1757936891 16 0 131231 0;}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal{mso-style-unhide:no;mso-style-qformat:yes;mso-style-parent:"";margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify;mso-pagination:widow-orphan;font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-fareast-font-family:"MS Mincho";}.MsoChpDefault{mso-style-type:export-only;mso-default-props:yes;font-size:10.0pt;mso-ansi-font-size:10.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Calibri;mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri;}div.WordSection1{page:WordSection1;}
