Beach times and beach forms. Gendered, work, and politicization in Argentina.

Argentine beaches are public, political, andpoliticized places. Current legislation protects free access to the coasts; establishesthat all the waters, riverbanks, beaches, and accesses to them, in all theirextension, are “public goods.” They are the “inalienable,” “unattachable,” and “indefeasible”patrimony of all citizens. Both use and access must be guaranteed to anyone whowants to use it. However, social processes play with the norm in differentways.In this text, I aminterested in thinking about beaches as gendered, complex, public, andpolitical spaces. I will do it from two cases. On the one hand, street vendingand, on the other hand, the politicization of a neighborhood fight that took ona national scale.In the first case, I aminterested in showing beaches as a place of work. I will develop how forms ofwork are generated for permanent residents and for thousands of people who arealso going to “do season.” Although street vending is not prohibited, itis regulated by the different coastal municipalities. In addition, some groupshave the concession to make economical use of the beach. Besides, groups “informally”control the coastal spaces. This leads to a series of negotiations to be ableto work in that space.
