It is known as South Basin (?Cuenca Sur?). The South Basin is the most important aquifer of Havana province and it has a length of 120 km and nearly 25 km of width. The recharge depends on precipitation regime and rain infiltrate in considerable proportion due to intense development of karst.  This aquifer is used for water supply to population, industry and irrigation and is affected by overexploitation, depletion and risk of contamination by anthropogenic action and saline sea intrusion. This investigation was supported by an International Collaboration Project represented by the ?Centro de Protección e Higiene de las Radiaciones? (CPHR), Cuba and the ?Instituto de Geocronología y Geología Isotópica? (INGEIS, CONICET-UBA), Argentina. The main objectives are the isotope and chemical characterization of the aquifer and to delimit the sector influenced by saline intrusion.  This paper presents preliminary results obtained during the first research phase.
