We present a study of the evolution of the orbital period Porb of the redback binary system PSR J1023+0038 formed by a neutron star and a solar-type star. The models of binary evolution that consider irradiation feedback and instantaneous orbital sychronization do not provide an adequate description of dPorb/dt. For example, for the case of the redback PSR J1723-2837, such models predict a value of this parameter three orders of magnitude lower than the observations. Because of this reason, we included tidal effects in our models. We applied them for the case of PSR J1023+0038 and found that in order to reach the observed value of dPorb/dt the stellar rotation should be slightly out of synchronicity with the orbit at the moment in which mass transfer ceases; a result which is in agreement with the case of PSR J1723-2837. This indicates the necessity of considering detailed tidal effects in binary evolution.
