I will discuss (known andunknown) lower and upper bounds for the number of positive solutions of systemsof n sparse polynomials in n variables, together with applications to thedetermination of the number of positive steady states for families ofmultivariate polynomials occurring in the standard mass-action kineticsmodeling of the dynamics of biochemical reaction networks.
