Resumen:
Infectious diseases represent the second cause of mortality and one of the most important problems is related to the growing resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics. The objective was to evaluate the effect of the combination of propolis collected in San Juan, with commercial drugs, also to determine the content of active responsible compounds. The combination of ethanolic extract propolis (EEP) with antimicrobial agents (meropenem® and fluconazole) was tested using the checkboard design and calculating the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI), against ATCC strains and clinical isolates of bacteria and yeast fungi. The total content of phenolics compounds was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteau method and the quantification of flavonoids according to Chang et al. (2002). The EEP showed antifungal activity against C. tropicalis and C. parasilopsis of clinically isolated with MIC values of 62.5 µg/ml. The Staphylococcus aureus methicillin-sensitive ATCC 29213, S. aureus methicillin-resistant ATCC 43300 strains were sensitive with MICs values of 125 and 250µg/ml, respectively, while that against Gram (-) bacteria were less active (MIC= 500µg/ml). The combination of EEP with the commercial agents showed an additive effect (FICI>0.5) and a dose reduction index (DRI) of commercial agents. The EEP presented high content of phenolics (386.46 mgEAG/g extract) and flavonoids compounds (58.20mgEQ/g extract). These results indicate that the propolis of San Juan combined with commercial agents could be a strategy to reduce antimicrobial resistance and toxicity.
