Resumen:
Essential oils (EOS) or volatile oils are secondary metabolitesproduced by aromatic plants. They are obtained from diverse parts of theseplants (leaves, seeds, berries, flowers, wood, peels, etc.) by differentextraction processes. Their uses date back to ancient cultures whobequeathed to us their knowledge about EOs benefits. Several studies havereported their promising potential applications in human health due to thevarious and helpful properties of phytocompounds. In this chapter, someutilizations of EOs and their components in cosmetic and dentalapplications are discussed. Particularly, their anti-inflammatory andantioxidant properties which are very advantageous for the cosmeticindustry to neutralize free radicals and prevent lipid peroxidation of cellmembranes. On the other hand, the use of EOs in dental applications aremainly linked to their antimicrobial properties, useful inpreventinginfections and their ability to form polymeric nanofilms on dental implantswith proven antibacterial properties.
