Strobel lake basin is located on a high basaltic plateau (1000 masl). It is characterized by the presence of pampas and mainly by depressions where lagoons and rock shelters are found. The archaeological signal of the pampas is related to the high frequencies of stone hunting blinds (called “parapetos”) while in the basalt walls sorrounding the lagoons complementary human occupations and rock art (engravings) were also registred. The aim of this paper is to discuss several technological strategies developed by hunter-gatherer populations in order to cope with the plateau environment. The main human use of the plateau seems to be related to the seasonal hunting of guanaco, particulary newborns. From this stand point the lithic technological data coming from the pampas and the lagoons is integrated into a common frame of hunter-gatherer mobility.
