Abstract The artistic manifestations of the Pleistocene/Holocene transition: the evidence from the Central Patagonian Plateau (Patagonia, Argentina) This work discusses the differential distributions of the artistic manifestations from the Central Plateau of Santa Cruz during the Pleistocene/Holocene transition (ca. 11,000-8,500 C14 years BP). In this period of climatic and environmental instability, the variability of the archaeological sites from this plateau suggests that these may have had complementary functions and that complex social interaction networks were maintained, together with a high mobility and a deep knowledge of the landscape. However, 3 within this archaeological variability, the evidences of rock art that may be reliably associated with the early occupations are scarce. Given this panorama, this works seeks to analyze the causes of this differential distribution of the archaeological evidence. The results show particular modalities of symbolic expression in the northern and southern portions of the Central Plateau.
