The hematopietic stem cell niche that is thought to constitute the solid tumor niche share many of the same structural and functional components, suggesting the possibility that the hematopoietic and tumor niche are one in the same. The mesenchymal stem cells or osteoprogenitor cells, as well as osteoblasts are critical components for each of these niches, and are important components for regulating cellular processes such as homing and migration, proliferation and survival, and quiescence and dormancy of tumor cells. Current understanding of the mesenchymal stem cell properties may provide more insight to better defining the solid tumor niche, specially in the development of the bone marrow and bone pre-metastatic niche. KEYWORDS: mesenchymal stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, bone marrow, bone, tumor, pre-metastatic niche.
