Resumen:
Community wildlife management aims at improving sustainable use of natural resources by providing social and economic incentives to local people. A review on CWM projects in SA done in the context of the Evaluating Eden Project revealed that ecological, economic, social and legal factors have to be addressed in order to achieve sustainability. The relative importance of these factors was investigated in two case studies: one species based (vicuna management in Peru), and one ecosystem based (Mamiraua Reserve in Brazil). The study concludes that there is still a divorce between the development and conservation objectives of CWM initiatives. Sustainable use of wildlife has greater chances of success when local communities derive tangible benefits from conservation. Local institutions, policy makers, field practitioners, NGOs, biologists, social scientists and donor agencies have an important role to make this happen
