This chapter argues that innovation in health and research priorities should promote a bridging of the gap between the needs and services offered and support democratic knowledge-dissemination mechanisms. It examines the concept of a 'national innovation system' (NIS) and analyzes the health NIS of five Latin American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
