Using subfossil chironomid remains as indicators of past environmental conditions is now a well-established approach.From reconstructing lake trophic status to climate change, chironomids are among some of the best indicators for their abilityto provide quantifiable estimates of change. We review the published information about Postglacial and Anthropocenesubfossil chironomid records from Australia, New Zealand, and South America and outline the current and future directionsof chironomid research in these regions.
