The widespread use of pesticides worldwide in agricultural production and for thecontrol of disease vectors is an indicator of the cultivation status of different countries.With the growth in the global population and the concomitant intensification ofagricultural production, pesticide overuse and contamination have also increased. Thepesticide industry produces more than 800 active ingredients for the manufacture ofover 40,000 commercial formulations used in the agricultural sector. Understandingof the unsafe usage of pesticides is increasing as the deleterious consequences for livingspecies and the environment appear following occupational, accidental or incidentalexposure to different types of pesticides. Environmental risk assessment associatedwith the production, storage and usage of pesticides has an important part to play inregulatory decisions. Existing and new compounds should be continuously evaluatedto guarantee appropriate safety standards.
