Resumen:
The paper explores the different ways in which Dante was paradoxically interpreted as a symbol of Argentinian national identity from the 19th century to the first half of the 20th. It focuses on the first generation of Argentine intellectuals, the so called Generation of 1837 (Esteban Echeverría, Juan Baustista Alberdi, José Mármol), with particular attention to the discussion between Bartolomé Mitre – also a member of that generation, and the first Latin American translator of the Divine Comedy – and Domingo Faustino Sarmiento on the civic value of poetry, in which Dante played a crucial role, and to the influence of Mitre’s ideas on Leopoldo Lugones.
