The mainobjectiveofthisstudywastomeasurethermal(coolingrates,temperaturegradientsandvelocitiesoftheliquidusandsolidusisotherms),structural(grainsizeandprimaryandsecondarydendriticarmspacings)andtensileparameters(maximumtensilestrength(MTS),yieldstrength(YS)andultimatetensilestrength(UTS))inzinc–aluminum(ZA)hypoeutectic(Zn–3wt%Al)andhypereutectic(Zn–10 wt%Al,Zn–15wt%Al,Zn–20wt%Al,Zn–30wt%Al,Zn–37wt%AlandZn–50wt%Al)alloysdirec-tionallysolidified,whichpresentcolumnar,equiaxedandcolumnar-to-equiaxedtransition(CET)structures.ThedifferenttypesofstructureswereanalyzedwithopticalandScanningElectronMicroscopy(SEM). Correlationsbetweentemperaturegradient,coolingrate,localsolidificationtime,grainsizeanddendriticspacingsandtensiletestsparametersarepresentedanddiscussed.Theresultsshowtheinfluenceofconcentration,microstructuralarrangementandthermalconditionsonthemechanicalpropertiesduringthesolidificationprocess.
