Resumen:
Biological effects of polyphenols and their importance in human healthFlavonoids and other polyphenols constitute a wide variety of chemical compounds synthesized by plants (phytochemicals). They are part of the secondary metabolites that are not essential for the life of the organism but confer important biological properties. These compounds are related to the growth, cell reproduction and defense mechanisms of the plant against the action of pathogens and other predatory agents. They are found in various plant food sources such as onions, apples, spices, citrus fruits, tea, chocolate, red fruits, among many others. Due to their high consumption in the human diet, they have been the object of study of various research areas of both basic and applied sciences.Flavonoids have been described as having the ability to modulate the catalytic activity of a wide variety of enzymes, although, in some cases, it is not known with certainty which are the molecular mechanisms by which they exert their effect. Certain plants containing phenolic compounds have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years, so it is possible that the beneficial effects of these phytochemicals were known long before they were isolated as active compounds.
