Resumen:
Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is a herbaceous species, recently acknowledged for its nutritional properties and for its potential for productive diversification in agriculture and food and pharmaceutical industries. The aim of this work was to evaluate the optimal concentration of the irrigation solution for the initial growth of chia. Six irrigation solutions were used: MS, MS/2, MS/4, MS/6, MS/8 and MS/10. Four plants were placed per pot in substrate (sand:perlite:vermiculite 2:1:1 v/v), accounting two replicates per treatment. At the end of the experiment, the variables recorded were: length (cm) of stem, root, hypocotyl, epicotyl, internodes and petioles, total leaf area (cm2) and leaf health. The MS/4 treatment presented the highest seedling survival (> 60%), contrary to the MS treatment, which reached a mortality of 100%. While MS/8 presented the highest values in leaf area, MS/4 was the treatment with the lowest values and with variable portions of necrotic leaves as well as MS/2 and MS/10. In conclusion, the more concentrated irrigation solutions (MS and MS/2) presented adverse effects in all the evaluated parameters, while the MS/6 and MS/8 solutions presented higher values in stem length, leaf area, and plant survival.
