Resumen:
The aim of this study is to present the anatomic and histological pathological changes of Chronic Valve Disease (CVD) in the dog, describing histopathology by means of routine histotechnique and histochemical studies. Five canine hearts were obtained by necropsy,4 of them showing evidence of CVD, the remnant without pathology. At macroscopic examination, digital images were taken. Then, several samples were taken from de mitral valvular complex of each heart examined, and the samples were fixed and paraffin embedded. Five μm slides were stained using rutine technique ( hematoxilin-eosin) and histochemical stains (alcian blue-PAS- hematoxylin; Alcian blue-picrosirius red-ferric hematoxilin; orcein-hematoxilin). Multiple microscopic digital images were taken. The mixomatous transformation microscopic characteristics were described, according to the degrees depicted in gross pathology. Cell populations were described in the slides taken from the valves with de most severe changes, not previously described in the available readings. Alcian blue-PAS-hematoxilin and alcian blue-picrosirius red-ferric hematoxylin histochemical techniques were compared between each other. It is necessary to perform polarized light microscopic studies, amongst others, in order to extract data from changes present in the extracelullar matrix. Nowadays, investigations are focused in the possible etiology, centering studies in the cellular changes that could beget CVD.
