He started his career at the PhysiologyDepartment of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Uruguay. The studies heperformed as a physiologist together with HermoÂgenes Alvarez, AssociateProfessor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, gave rise to the Service of ObstetricPhysiology. They were pioneers in intrauterine measurement of the contractility ofthe uterus at different periods of gestation. The unit that they used (the intensity ofthe uterine contractions multiplied by their frequency over 10 min) was called theMontevideo unit and recognised all over the world.
