Sir, In their article Meerburg and de Jong (2003) concludethat the captive system promoted by the National Instituteof Agricultural Technology (INTA) in Argentinaprovided an opportunity for vicuña management inBolivia. This conclusion appears to be based on a rapidrural appraisal (RRA), a written questionnaire (12 localinhabitants in Los Lipez, Bolivia), a visit to one producerand the INTA Abrapampa. These authors? findings arequite the opposite of those we have reached in ourextensive study of vicuña-management systems in thesecountries, and we believe the evidence presented byMeerburg and de Jong needs to be challenged.
