We studied
a population of Tropidurus etheridgei
from the dry chaco of Salta
during wet and dry seasons. In this study area, T. etheridgei is a habitat generalist that will climb trees, but is
not strictly arboreal. Crypsis appears to be the typical antipredator response.
The diet consists primarily of ants, but adult and larval coleopterans are also
consumed. Myrmecophagy seems to be a common characteristic of the genus. Three
genera of nematode were found in the digestive tract. Body temperature of
field-active lizards averaged 35.8°C, and appears to be influenced by the
thermal environment. The results of this study, when compared to similar
studies of this species in different habitats, suggests that T. etheridgei shows plasticity in
habitat use, diet, and life-history between Cerrado and Chaco
habitats.
