The Piedra Parada Caldera is the main volcanic building of the Complejo Volcánico-Piroclástico del río Chubut medio. It is a 25 kilometers wide collapse trap door caldera of Paleoocene-Eocene age Aragón and Mazzoni (1997). The caldera collapse stage is related to the extrusion of more than 200 km3 of rhyolite ignimbrites known as the Ignimbrita Barda Colarada Formation of 57 Ma. The caldera is filled with pyroclastic deposits and interbedded glass domes, andesite funnel sills, tholeiitic basalt flows and alkali basalt flows. Aragón et al (2001, 2004a, 2004b, 2005).
