Resumen:
This work studies the effect of water stress, applied at the vegetative stage, on the epicuticular wax content (EWC) of leaves in Agropyron scabrifolium and Agropyron elongatum cultivars belonging to regions with different ecological characteristics. Quantification of waxes was carried out by the oxidation method whit potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid and their morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Water status of plants was definedin terms of relative water content (RWC) and water potential. Epicuticular wax content was greater in plant of cultivar El Palmar INTA of Agropyron scabrifolium, both in control and stressed plants. However, this cultivar suffered the major decreases in its water status under stress conditions. Water stress only provoked a significant increse in EWC of leaves in plants of cultivar El vizcachero of Agropyron elongatum, whose ability for water retention was similar to that cultivar seleccion Anguil of Agropyron scabrifolium. wax deposits in all cultivars were plate shaped, whit irregular edges and perpendicular of leaf surface. in all cases, waterstress provoked a decrease in plates size and a more dense distribution on leaf surface. the significance of these results is discussed in relation to drought resistance of these three cultivars.
