Resumen:
Seasonal movements and phylogenetic affinity of the Shear-tailed Gray-Tyrant (Muscipipravetula). – Migration patterns within the Neotropics remain poorly known. We provide dataobtained in Argentina and Paraguay that strongly support the idea that the Atlantic Forest endemic SheartailedGray-Tyrant (Muscipipra vetula, Tyrannidae) migrates essentially from east to west from Brazil toArgentina and Paraguay during the austral autumn-winter. The precise source for those migrants remainsunknown; however, the observed pattern coincides with the absence or decrease in abundance of the speciesat some sites in southern Brazil. Additionally, it has been suggested that the Shear-tailed Gray-Tyrantcould be an altitudinal migrant, and also a northward migrant within Brazil. Based on our observations anda reanalysis of published data on general appearance, voices, behavior, anatomy of the syrinx and scantybreeding information, we concurr with the current view that considers the Streamer-tailed Tyrant (Gubernetesyetapa) as the closest relative of the Shear-tailed Gray-Tyrant.
