Resumen:
Several Fe-based alloys are being considered aspotential candidates for applications which require shape memory behavior or superelasticproperties. The possibility of using fabrication methods which are well knownin the steel industry is very attractive and encourages a large amount ofresearch in the field. In the present manuscript Fe-Mn-based alloys are mainlyaddressed. On the one hand, attention is paid to the shape memory effect wherethe alloys contain (a) a maximum amount of Mn up to around 30 wt.%, (b) severalpossible substitutional elements like Si, Cr, Ni, Co and Nb and (c) some possibleinterstitial elements like C. On the other hand, superelastic alloys areanalyzed, mainly the Fe-Mn-Al-Ni system discovered a few years ago. The mostnoticeable properties resulting from the martensitic transformations which areresponsible for the mentioned properties, i.e. the fcc-hcp in the first caseand the bcc-fcc in the latter, are discussed. Selected potential applicationsare also analyzed.
