Resumen:
This paper is the first of a series presenting the results of a systematic experimental study of the lattice parameters (LPs) of metastable phases formed by quenching Fe-Mn alloys with 0 to 30 at.% Mn. Here the LPs of the fcc (gamma ) and bcc (alpha') phases are investigated as a function of composition, using an X-ray technique. A rather detailed discussion of the experimental methods is presented. In particular, the use of a plastic deformation treatment for stabilising the alpha' phase relatively to the gamma phase is considered. With the present data, trends are stablished in the composition dependence of the LPs and the average volumes per atom of the gamma and alpha' phases, which are used in assessing the relative volumen change associated with the gamma / alpha' martensitic transformation.
