Resumen:
Cyanobacteria can prrxlucc biotoxins üat are significant hazards to humans. After the in¡oxication incidcnt i¡¡ 1996 at thc city of Caruaru; Bn¡zil, a phyroplankron-monitoring programme r+´as establishcd at its main water supply. thc Tabocas rcservoir. D¿rt¿ obtained during 1997 and 1998 rcvcalcd the dominant spccics at ´lhtncas to be Cylindxtspennapsb ruciáors* ii, rvhich was responsible for a ¡nassivc bloom observed in July-Octob€r 1998. Laboratory cultures of isolatc [TEP- 018 demonstrated highly toxic propc..rties,m icc inoculated with this strain exhibited üre somc synrptoms as tlosc of paral¡ic shcllfrsh poisoning, with an acute lethal cffect of 9.3 mousc units mg-r of dry cells. Several saxitoxin analogues werc idcnriñed in thcsc culturcs, specilicall¡ suxit<¡xin (3.3 mol% total toxin corrtc¡rt).
