Metallographic observations of the surface of polycrystalline specimens in an optical microscope illuminated with a He-Ne laser beam, at oblique incidence, are compared with observations with white light also at oblique incidence. This kind of laser illumination permits us to distinguish distinct angular directions of the surface roughness.
