Resumen:
Chitosan has been considered an environmental-friendlypolymer. However, its use in agriculture has not beenextended yet due to its relatively low solubility in water.N-Methylene phosphonic chitosan (NMPC) is a watersolublederivative prepared by adding a phosphonicgroup to chitosan. This study demonstrates that NMPChas a fungicidal effect on the phytopathogenic fungusFusarium solani f. sp. eumartii (F. eumartii) judged bythe inhibition of F. eumartti mycelial growth and sporegermination. NMPC affected fungal membrane permeability, reactive oxygen species production, and celldeath. Also, this chitosan-derivative exerted antifungaleffects against two other phytopathogens, Botrytis cinerea, and Phytophthora infestans. NMPC did not affecttomato cell viability at the same doses applied to thesephytopathogens to exert fungicide action. In addition towater solubility, the selective biological cytotoxicity ofNMPC adds value in its application as an antimicrobialagent in agriculture.
