Resumen:
The genus Setaria P. Beauv. comprises nearly 114 species widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the World, with the highest number of representatives in Africa, Australia, and South America. The genus is characterized by having setae associated with the spikelets. Although several regional treatments are available for the genus, mainly in America, Africa, and Australia, a modern revision of Setaria is still missing for the Old World. The purpose of this research is to produce a taxonomic study of the Old World species, to analyze the relationships of Setaria within the Paniceae and the infrageneric arrangement of taxa. Old World species of the genus are treated, and as a result a key of the informal groups is presented, as well as morphological descriptions, illustrations and geographical distributions. A phylogenetic analysis, including Old and New World species, was conducted in order to test the monophyly of the genus. Additionally, relationships of Setaria with allied genera of the bristle clade in tribe Paniceae were studied.
