Resumen:
ABSTRACT. The group Nótala of Paspalum subg. Paspalum (Poaceae) is revised to include species pre-viously treated in group Linearia. Twcnty-one species, including two varieties, are recognized. The work is based on field and herbarium studies and the evaluation of exomorphological characters. The group Nótala com-prises perennials found in open áreas or near borders of rivers and streams from southern México and the Caribbean to Chile and Argentina; three taxa have been introduced in the U.S.A. The species are characterized by membranous ligules, lanceolate to filiform leaves, and inflorescences with usually two conjúgate racemes bearing solitary, glabrous or pilóse spikelets on short pedicels. The lower glurne is usually absent, and the upper glume and lower lemma are subequal, usually 5-nerved, membranous or papyraceous, corrugated or not; occa-sionally the upper glume is also absent. The lower palea and lower flower are absent, and the upper íloret is in-durate and usually bears papillae, bicellular microhairs, and prickles. The base chromosome number is x=10. Keys to the subgenera of Paspalum and to the species of group Nótala are provided. For each species a ful! syn-onymy and description are presenled; all species are mapped and all bul one are illuslraled.
