The treatment of complex systems and an integrated evaluation are considerad as a newapproach to the study of desertification. A procedure for obtaining desertificationindicators and benchmarks is presented, based on these concepts and on participativeplanning, to accomplish a system of desertification assessment and monitoringorientated towards problem solving and towards an action plan directed to final usersand decision makers.
