Resumen:
During the last few years, programs in foreign languages have seen an increase in requirements that move away from the teaching of literature and into cultural studies. While these changes have seen more radical in languages whose enrolment has fallen over the last few years (as is the case of French and German), it has also taken place albeit in a less institutionalized form in Spanish departments. This talk addresses the related questions of how the teaching of foreign languages needs to be reconceptualized in an area of globalization, of massive migrations, of the culturalization of literature, and the breakdown of national, and disciplinary borders; and of the type of training faculty need in order to teach these new curriculum. I address the contemporary role of Spanish in the United States, and the need to conceive of transnational and transamerican curricula.
