This genus includes the single species, Octomys mimax, which is primarily a surface-dwelling, desert-adapted octodontid limited to the sub-Andean areas of the Monte biome in northwestern Argentina (Cabrera 1961; Contreras et al. 1987; Ojeda and Tabeni 2009).
