Resumen:
Species of Alnus (alders) have becomeinvaders in several parts of the world. Here we reportthe presence of three naturalized alien species: A.glutinosa, A. incana and A. rubra from severalpopulations in nature reserves of northwestern Patagonia,an area of remarkably high biodiversity. Alnusglutinosa had been cited previously for Chile andsouthern Argentina, but A. incana and A. rubra arehere reported for the first time. As we found morphologicalvariation within and among the populations ofthese introduced species that makes their discriminationdifficult, we used chloroplast (trnH-psbA) andnuclear ribosomal (ITS) DNA sequences to confirmtheir identifications from morphological characteristics. Results from nuclear and chloroplast sequencedata confirm the morphological tentative identificationof the three species and remark the utility of molecularinformation together with morphology for the detectionof introduced species of taxonomically difficultgroups. The invasive characteristics of these alien treespecies are discussed in relation to the conservation ofthe nature reserves where they are found. Keywords Alnus glutinosa Alnus incana Alnusrubra Argentina Betulaceae DNA barcoding Naturalized alien species
