CONICET Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas * E-mail: mefarias@proimi.org.ar The high altitude Andean Wetlands presents unique features for the study of bacterial diversity. In this area are freswater lakes located more than 4,200 meters above sea level with extreme environmental conditions: high salinity, high incidence of UV, low phosphorus content, high content of heavy metals, etc. The aim of this work was study the bacterial composition of 6 lakes by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). ). Four of the lakes that make up the Salar de la laguna Verde (L. Azul, L. Verde, L. Negra and L. Aparejos), lake Vilama and lake Catal corresponding to Salar del Hombre Muerto were sampled during the summers of 2006 and 2007. Bacterioplankton community composition in all of the lakes was represented mainly by Gamma-proteobacteria (Halomonas sp., Marinomonas sp, Stenotrophomonas sp., Xanthomonas sp.) Alpha-proteobacteria (Roseobacter sp.), Beta proteobacterias (Aquabacetrium commune sp.), HGC, (Staphylococcus sp., Agrococcus jenensis and uncultured bacterium) and CFB (Uncultured Bacteroidetes). In L. Negra and L. Aparejos there is a predominance of Gamaproteobacterias (60%), while in the Azul and Catal, OTUS found were represented equally by all filos. Firmicutes was the other filo predominant, with 20% en Azul, Vilama, Catal and Aparejos. Bacteroidetes is found in all lakes sampled at a rate that varies from 15 to 30%. The most of the bands shared among lakes. There was not appear bands exclusively in specific lakes. Interestingly, many of the sequences showed high identity with oligotrophic and extremophile bacteria collected in GenBank, which suggests bacterial assemblages well adapted to extreme environmental conditions.
