Resumen:
Poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate), PHB, is a microbial biopolymer produced by many bacteria under unbalanced culture conditions. These unbalanced conditions can be easily reached in a fed-batch bioreactor. Then, it is important to know the system behavior and its constraints, with the objective of inducing unbalanced conditions that allows optimizing the feeding profiles and therefore the PHB productivity. In this work, dynamic optimization has been applied for maximizing the PHB productivity in a fed-batch bioreactor. Optimal feeding profiles of carbon and nitrogen sources and their respective concentrations were obtained using the generalised PROcess Modelling System (gPROMS). If reliable bioreaction kinetics is available, the dynamic optimization becomes a very valuable tool to predict the optimal operating conditions to maximize the PHB productivity reducing considerably both time and experimental costs.
