Resumen:
Tobacco use is the main cause of preventable death with an estimated toll of 6 million deaths per yearworldwide. The highest incidence of smoking among men is in lower-middle-income countries; for totalpopulation, smoking prevalence is highest among upper-middle-income countries. In a previous review,we found a strong inverse association between smoking prevalence and income across mostgeographical areas, for both genders and especially in the younger age group. The review focused onstudies published from 1990 onwards. Additional analysis revealed that low-income smokers had worseoutcomes from tobacco-related diseases and that the proportion of tobacco spending was higheramong low income households with a resulting impact on their finances. The main objective of thepresent study is to update the previous review in order to assess the evolution of differences insmoking prevalence across socioeconomic status categories over the last five years.
