Taxonomic Revision of Aloysia (Verbenaceae, Lantaneae) in South America

Aloysia Paláu is the thirdrichest genus of tribe Lantaneae, after LippiaL. and Lantana L. Recent molecularphylogenetic studies have circumscribed genus Aloysia to 30 species, with theabsorption of most of Acantholippia Griseb.species and monotypic Xeroaloysia Tronc.,and the exclusion of several North American Aloysiaspecies that nest within the Lippia-Lantanaclade. Newly confined Aloysiaare found mostly in South America, where the genus is represented by 28 speciesand 6 varieties. Only 2 Aloysiaspecies are endemic to North America, and Aloysia gratissima (Gillies & Hook. ex Hook.) Tronc. var. gratissima is the only taxon found inboth North and South America. A taxonomic revision of the genus Aloysia for South America is providedwith detailed morphological descriptions or references to a complete moderndescription, as well as a key for their identification, illustrations orindication of iconography, distribution and herbarium specimens lists. Eight newsynonyms are here established and one lectotypification is here proposed for Aloysia brasiliensis Moldenke.
